What is a golden product record?

A golden product record is the single, maintained, authoritative version of everything true about one product — one record per SKU, keyed on its EAN — from which every sales channel is fed. Correct it once and the correction reaches everywhere the product sells, instead of dying in one retailer's inbox.

What's inside

What does Eagre's golden record carry?

Everything a retailer needs to list the product properly, and everything a buyer needs to trust it. One record, one SKU, one EAN.

  • Identity and retail basics — product name, brand, pack size, species and life stage, and Manufacturer RRSP, which travels as data only. Eagre never controls retail price.
  • Listing copy — the approved description, benefit copy and key selling points, written once and reused everywhere.
  • Imagery — pack shots and supporting images at the resolutions retailers actually need.
  • Composition and nutrition — the full ingredients declaration and a proper analytical constituents table, not a paragraph of prose pasted into a description field.
  • Feeding and safety — feeding guides by weight and life stage, storage instructions, warnings and cautions.
  • Claims and compliance — what may be said about the product, with the substantiation held alongside the claim.
  • Identifiers and logistics — EANs, case codes, inner and outer quantities, dimensions and weights.
  • Per-retailer status — what each connected retailer has approved, what is pending, and what has gone live.

If a fact about the product matters to a shelf, it belongs in the record — and it lives there exactly once.

Category-aware

Why does the record change shape by category?

A pet product record is not one-size-fits-all. Eagre's golden record is category-aware by design: each category defines the fields that matter, and completeness is scored against exactly those fields — with the missing ones named.

FOOD & TREATS

Composition first

Ingredients declaration, analytical constituents table, additives, feeding guide by weight and life stage. A food record without a constituents table is scored incomplete, and the meter says so.

TOYS & ACCESSORIES

Materials and safety

Materials, safety standards, size and durability guidance, suitability by breed size. A toy's record never shows a nutrition panel it doesn't need — the fields simply aren't there.

SUPPLEMENTS

Actives and dosage

Active ingredients, dosage by animal weight, administration guidance, and the claims those actives can support. Scored against what a supplement listing actually requires.

Journalled

A record with a memory

A golden record keeps its paper trail. Submissions carry who approved them and when, and every sync push is journalled — so when a recipe changes, the record shows what was proposed, who accepted it, and which retailers have taken the update.

That audit trail matters commercially as well as operationally. When a retailer asks why a value changed, the answer is in the record. When a compliance question lands, the history of a claim — proposed, approved, published — is one lookup, not an archaeology dig through email attachments named final_v3_AMENDED.

A spreadsheet remembers nothing. A golden record keeps receipts — and can show them.

The difference

Golden record vs the master spreadsheet

Most pet brands already have a "master" spreadsheet. The problem is what happens next: a spreadsheet becomes a copy the moment it's emailed. Each retailer edits their copy, and the versions drift apart — measurably.

96.5%
of matched products have an ingredients issue — the list missing or mismatched somewhere they're sold
99.2%
have a nutrition-table issue — analytical constituents missing or mismatched on at least one listing
100%
have a feeding-guide issue somewhere they're sold

Eagre analysis of 6,000+ EAN-matched products across 14 UK pet retailers, July 2026. An issue means the field is missing from at least one listing, or word-for-word mismatched between listings after formatting normalisation; sister storefronts of the same retail group are excluded.

A golden record is a source, not a copy. It is connected to the retailers who sell the product, journalled so activity is never lost, approved so nothing goes live without the retailer's sign-off, and synchronised so a correction made on Tuesday reaches every connected shelf at the next sync — not whenever the next range review happens to surface the spreadsheet.

FAQ

Golden record questions, answered

Is a golden record the same as a PIM entry?
They are close relatives. A PIM entry is a product record inside a product information management system; a golden record is what that entry becomes when it is treated as the single authoritative source — governed, approved and connected to the channels it feeds. Eagre's golden record is a pet-specific PIM entry with syndication built in: composition, analytical constituents, feeding guidance and per-retailer status live in one record, not across several spreadsheets.
What happens when I change a value in the golden record?
The change is recorded with who made it and when, and every push to a retailer is journalled. New listings go live only once the retailer approves them and flips them live on their side; corrections to listings a retailer has already accepted syndicate at the next sync, with the full activity trail kept. Per-change approval controls for live listings are being designed with launch partners — and no new listing ever appears without the retailer's say-so.
Who owns the golden record?
The brand owns the truth: what the product is, what is in it, how it should be fed and what may be claimed about it. The retailer owns their shelf: which version of that truth goes live on their site, and when. Eagre sits between the two, carrying the brand's record to each retailer and recording each retailer's decision against it. Eagre never controls retail price — Manufacturer RRSP travels as data only.
How complete does a golden record need to be?
Complete enough to list well in its category. Every record in Eagre carries a completeness meter scored against the fields its category actually requires — a complete dog food record needs an analytical constituents table and a feeding guide; a complete toy record needs materials and safety standards instead. The meter names the missing fields, so completeness is a worklist rather than a vague percentage.
